ROYAL CREST CABINET

Half way through this painting project I got a vision of a magical lion & unicorn crest
spread across the face of my cabinet.

The cabinet I was working with was originally a lumber store pine kit project. It didnt get assembled
right and looked so bad that the thrift store I purchase it from had labeled it as *HOME MADE*

I rebuilt it from the bottom up, using new screws, new handles, new hinges, and a few well placed
"L" brackets. She ended up getting a rustic paint finish and embellished across the front with a
 wonderful transfer.

The top is painted with ASCP Graphite and the body was painted ASCP Old White. It turned out wonderful but hard to photograph so you can see how amazing it looks in person. I used the dark wax
all over the body to add age and depth to the finish.

As long as you understand how the 2 waxes work together you can create all sorts of finishes.

PAINTING MARBLE eiffel tower chest

There were so many aspects to bringing the Eiffel Tower chest together.

I had to replace many missing mouldings and do several repairs to the inside and top frame.

I learned that the underside of marble inserts are not finished and sealed
therefore can be painted and waxed.

SEALED AND POLISHED                       RAW AND POROUS

The original marble insert was bright orange and had damaged areas.

Get everything painted and waxed then ....

add an adhesive vinyl wall graphic after unscrewing
and cleaning all the fancy escutcheons (lock plates)

This wall graphic came in 9 sq. panels and I bought it at HomeSense about 6 months ago.

BEFORE                                               AFTER

One of the final steps was to preserve the amazing wood interior by waxing and polishing the drawers.

A HUSBANDS INVESTMENT soft blue 3 drawer chest

Before I knew it George was bidding on a three drawer chest
at our very first auction.

I was some what shocked as we had not looked at the piece before the bidding started
and we didnt have a good view of it from where we sat.
With in moments he had won and was holding his number up to the auctioner.
I quietly whispered to him "thats more then I would normally spend
and I dont know that I even want that"
His response was

"Its my investment, Ill get good return on it when you re-do it"
For those of you who have got to know George he can be quite the character
best friend, supportive hubby, and even has a good idea now and then.

There are some elements I just dont mention often enough when
revamping icky furniture such as ...

#1. Creatures that have come to call these places home.
This dresser housed one partticulary large monster of the 8 legged variety.
(NO VISUAL)

#2. The *stuff* that builds up from use over time behind the hardware,
These are the moments I wonder ...
is blasting the entire unit with a garden hose really such a bad idea?

#3. Remembering to turn your project upside down when you start offers so many benefits.
You can vacuum out the insides so much easier,
the top surface is protected if you dont intend to paint it,
its much easier to see and deal with repairs needed on the underside,
and no crawling around on your hands and knees to paint.

Pure White mixed with Provence ASCP
Above you can see the difference of the untouched side panel
and the sanded side shelf and drawer faces.

Once wax is applied to the distressed paint the color pops again
and the distressing stands out.

Stripped and Sanded Top
Stained Top

4 Coats of Poly Applied
The top of this piece turned out magnificent.

This chest would be a great bathroom vanity.
These pretty side panels with shelf are just waiting for someone
to install hanging racks to display guest towels.

Georges investment is finished and a good friend of his is now the proud owner.

THE 7 UP CHRISTMAS TREE

This year I put my Christmas tree in a vintage 7-UP crate. Our tree is a gorgeous faux blue spruce
4 ft tall tree. I bought it years ago from The Bay in downtown Vancouver.

Below left you can see the tree is just being set up and started to get decorated.
Below right all the lights are strung and the tree is all trimmed.

When your family is young and you have children running around the house Christmas is very much
about them. And this includes decorating for Christmas too. You trim the tree with the kids and each
ornament you put on the tree brings back memories of past holidays. Once the kids have moved out
and are setting up their own homes and their own trees its time to decorate for yourselves. For some
it is a very hard concept but just like anything in life you must teach yourselves to do.

Start out with the thought "I get to decorate the way I want"
And try to start early in the season so you have many days and nights to enjoy your hard work.
My house does not get Christmasified in a day, one area gets worked on each day over a week.
As each area starts to glitter with lights it spurs me on to want to do a little more somewhere else in our home.

Decorating for yourself to enjoy is just as important as decorating for your family to enjoy.

How to Consider Bathroom Accessories

When considering bathroom accessories it is wise to consider your bathroom style, design, patterns, etc. For instance, if you have a kiddie’s bathroom, you want to consider its details to avoid adding bathroom accessories that make it appear. If you are designing a guest bath, you may want to add a sink skirt, fancy towels, soaps, dishes, mirror, shower curtain, toilet seat, decorative toiletries, and so on.

Decorating a master bathroom may benefit from fringed rugs, towel display, monogram towels, potpourri, decorative soap, and dish, bath oils, etc. After you decide you room, you want to consider your style. What do you prefer? Do you like traditional? Do you like contemporary? Do like Victorian? It is your choice. If you like the country style you can add a few baskets, picket fence accessories, rod-pocket shower curtains, etc. Add a couple of tiebacks to the curtain, preferably braided ties and you are off to a country setting.

If you like, the wood looks consider rustic bathroom accessories, such as birdhouses. Birch baskets are nice as well. Create a garden in your basket and you are off to the wood look. If you want dramatic, try adding live plants, vines, blending shower curtains, rugs, toilet seat, etc. On the other hand, if you want a fishery bath, add a fish toilet seat, matching curtains, and perhaps a sink skirt to match. Set off the area by adding nature-based tiles, walls, and so on.

Now that you have your style down, consider the patterns and colors you desire. If you are adding bathroom accessories to offset your bath, try coordinating your colors and patterns with fixtures, floor covering, wall colors, and other decorative. If you have porcelain fixtures, you may want to consider off-white, antique white or related colors and patterns when choosing bathroom accessories.

In addition, if you have porcelain sink, tubs, or toilet you may want to try a few darker shades or else brighter colors. Try to match the color. You can add greens to your room, which you can offset with accents of yellow as well.

If you are not, sure, which colors and patterns are best suited for your bath, try visiting Home Depots or related stores, and carry home a few samples. Any store that sells paints, tile, etc, will provide you sample colors.

How can I find color schemes?
You can match color schemes by considering neutral colors, in depth darker shades, brilliant colors, strong shades, etc. Patterns might include the pastels, which include the blonde woods. Wickers will set off blonde woods.

What about storage:
Once you have done your style, patterns, colors, etc, you may want to add storage. If you already have sufficient storage, you may want to add wicker baskets to the space.
Toss in your shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, and other accessories to clear up additional space.

How much does it cost for accessories?
It depends on where you purchase the items. If you are on a budget, try visiting your local Family Dollar Stores, General Dollar, or related stores. Often you will find various bathroom accessories to offset your bath. The items are affordable, and often delightful to the eyes.

Online you will find a wide array of dollar stores. The stores online will ship your items to your doorstep while offering you a wider selection. In addition, you can view the images online, which helps you match your patterns and colors more freely.

If you want to add additional storage, online you will find affordable shelves and baskets. The deals online offer you the option of saving money and time.

The Wood Shop Jr

Well as explained before, my family and I have again moved back to Wisconsin, Its good to be home, I dont believe we ever should have left, but what do I know. anyhow

We now reside in a small 2 bedroom upstairs of a duplex. Not a whole lot of room to move around at all, and no space for a real shop, The only saving grace for my sanity...I mean my hobby (could be insanity just as easy I guess) is a small almost 5 by almost 9 space at the bottom landing. It is here I have settled the shop for the time being.

I have wanted to do more hand tool work anyhow, I thought...heres my opportunity... I have to say as far as efficiency goes everything is at reach, but as a matter of poor pity me, I miss my table saw and I really miss my workbench. The other than hand held power tools the only thing I made space for is my bench top band saw. Relegated to the floor when not in use.

I am proud of the construct I made for the woodworking vice, a 2x4 scrap and there you go. I secure it to the cabinet top with 4 screws when I need it and back the screws off to reposition or remove it completely. What I wanna work on now is a bench dog system with some wedged stops and maybe a Wonderpup (Veritas)

Anyhow here are some pic of the new shop well see what I can wrangle out of here.

Cheers
Oldwolf
